What Coffee with Cats is NOT. . .

Coffee with Cats is not a tribute to the coffee bean specially processed by the civet's digestive track.

Coffee with Cats is not a fetish page devoted to the cat cafes of Japan.

What is Coffee with Cats? Keep reading to find out.

The first of the Photoshopped spectaculars, created for my husband in homage of a poster he found in Cairo with a similar disregard for proportion or scale. That's us on the roof. But that's not our real house.

Mountain Cat Alley

Strombeek and Louie like the idea of being savage mountain cats out in the Yosemite wilderness. They like the idea of sharpening their claws on trees to mark their territory, of being 7-9 feet tall (or maybe it's 6-8) and fighting and scaring tourists.

But I'm not sure that the tourist in the background is taking the appropriate action when in such close proximity to two such beasts.

If you come across a mountain lion, there are a few things you're supposed (or not supposed) to do if you don't want to be eaten.

  • Do not run.
  • Shout in a low voice and wave your arms or hold open your coat to look large and threatening.
  • Maintain eye contact and do not crouch down. (Even to pick up small children. You should pick them up, but make sure you don't crouch when you do so. Good luck with that!)
  • Throw sticks or rocks.
  • If an attack occurs, fight back. (Otherwise, you don't stand a chance.)
Much like if you encounter a bear, only I don't think you're supposed to fight back? You're not supposed to chase it anyway--that was a big no-no on all the signage. Although apparently no one has been attacked by a mountain lion in Yosemite, and no one has been killed by a bear.

Here's an incomplete list of North American cougar attacks, although of the 23 that occurred in the past century, note that the majority happened in Canada. But the list is incomplete, so you could help by expanding it.
